An Impactable Case Study: Brave's Overdose Detection Devices

Brave Technology Co-Op (Brave)  is a medical device company with products designed to detect overdoses and activate life-saving community response whenever and wherever people use drugs. Brave is at the forefront of addressing the opioid overdose crisis that claims 116,000 lives and costs $1.6 trillion annually in Canada and the US. Their flagship innovations, the Brave Sensor and Brave Buttons, play a pivotal role in preventing fatal overdoses, instantly alerting on-site personnel to potential emergencies, providing peace of mind to community sites and businesses, and safeguarding frontline workers in shared housing and community care centers from burnout and trauma—all while prioritizing individual privacy rights.

The Need

While the anecdotal benefits of their products were clear, they needed a way to quantify this impact to attract investors and grantors.

Brave turned to Impactable to help quantify and articulate their impact. We started by setting up separate impact models for each of Brave’s three products: buttons, sensors, and a wearable.

Each model started with a unit-level impact analysis, in this case the number of overdoses that were able to be reversed per facility where brave detection devices are installed. Impactable analyzed the outcomes if Brave’s devices had not been installed and had not provided early overdose detection, such as hospitalization, hypoxia, and mortality.

Brave then entered their financial projections, and Impactable automatically aggregated their total impact projections.

The Analysis

Impactable's platform enabled Brave to:

  • Quantify Economic Impact: By analyzing the cost savings associated with outcomes like reduced hospital admissions and emergency responses, Brave could demonstrate the economic benefits of their devices and the return on investment for their potential government clients.
  • Measure Social Outcomes: Impactable helped Brave quantify the precise social outcomes of their products, such as the lives saved and reduced hospitalizations.
  • Forecast Impact Projections: With Impactable's analytics, Brave could project the future impact of their devices, providing a compelling case for investors and grantors.

The Results

With the detailed impact reports generated by Impactable, Brave was able to:

  • Secure Grants: Brave successfully acquired grants from SBIR, NIH, Health Canada, and NHS, providing the funding needed to scale their operations.
  • Earn Certifications: By providing verifiable impact data, Brave enhanced their credibility with stakeholders, and secured the highest ever B Corp certification score for a company of their size.
